Dr. Mulholland’s expertise with FUE hair transplants is unparalleled. SpaMedica has been performing automated FUE procedures since 1997, longer than any other clinic in North America. We’ve also placed the most FUE grafts (over a million). Dr. Mulholland is recognized worldwide for perfecting FUE, and has lectured, taught, and/or trained the majority of automated FUE physicians on the continent. At SpaMedica we also offer a guarantee of success to all of our Ottawa FUE patients.
In May of 2021, after 25 years as Canada’s most recognized Cosmetic Surgeon, Dr. Mulholland retired from active Plastic Surgery Practice. Dr. Mulholland moved to the United States to pursue his work with InMode MD electrosurgical (a company he co-founded) in the United States. He will continue to educate and teach the science of practice management through his BoomerangFX book, webinars series, and the SaaS practice management software (another company he co-founded). In 2022, Dr. Mulholland moved to London, England, to expand the InMode technology and BoomerangFX Software message internationally.
FUE, or follicular unit extraction, allows follicular units to be harvested in singles, doubles, triples, and quadruples, ensuring that genetically related hair families grow together to produce a more natural-looking pattern. The most effective way to undergo an FUE hair transplant without leaving a linear scar is to harvest the hair from the back of the scalp using automated robotic FUE harvest technologies Artas and NeoGraft.
If Dr. Mulholland has asked you for “before photos,” be sure to snap shots from a variety of angles: from the front with your hairline visible; left and right side profile shots; left and right side 45-degree angle shots; the top of your head; and the back of your head. Additional shots will be requested if needed!
Do not shave or cut your hair for at least two weeks before your FUE transplant. If you have little hair to hide the transplants, the top of your head may be shaven pre-procedure to allow the grafts and genetic hair to grow out together. With more extensive sessions involving 1500+ grafts, the entire back and sides of the scalp will be shaved just before surgery too. Additionally, refrain from drinking alcohol for at least three days prior to your transplant. Bottom line: for best results, simply follow all Dr. Mulholland’s instructions!
The first phase of the procedure involves extraction from the back of your scalp, which takes about 4 hours. After this, we deploy a “stick-and-place” technique in which a small hypodermic needle creates a small slit between your recipient’s hair. As the needle is removed, the graft is inserted. This whole process takes 2-4.5 hours. Thus, you should plan for an 8-10 hour day.
Post hair transplant, a dressing is placed over the tiny extraction holes at the back of your scalp. You return the following day to have a new dressing applied, and you can return home after that. If you’d like regular follow-ups via FaceTime, these will be happily provided! Most patients can return to work in 7-12 days. Do wait 12-14 months before judging the full density and thickness of your hair restoration!
