How Long Does a Toe Fungus Treatment Take?

The treatment takes 10-15 minutes.

What Is a Toe Fungus Treatment?

The toe fungus treatment uses the PinPointe™ FootLaser™ to kill the fungus that lives under and in the toenail. The light from the laser goes through the toenail and heats up and kills organisms that cause toenail fungus. This treatment is more effective than topical and oral medications used to treat toenail fungus.

Are your toenails thick, discoloured, and crumbling at the edges? Are they distorted in shape and have an odour? If so, toe fungus treatment may be right for you.

Who Is a Toe Fungus Treatment Candidate?

Most men and women with toenail fungus can undergo treatment at SpaMedica. Ideal patients do not have any serious medical conditions. Candidates also:

  • Have yellow or white discolourations on one or more toenails
  • Have thickened nails
  • Experience crumbling around the sides of the nail
  • Understand that the treatment works immediately, but it takes three months to see the results

Benefits of a Toe Fungus Treatment

Effective and Permanent

Toe fungus removal treatment with the PinPointe™ FootLaser™ has a high success rate, and the results are permanent. Patients must take special care to avoid additional infections, but the fungus from the initial infection will be gone after the treatment.

Painless

Toe fungus treatment is virtually painless. Patients experience some warmth during the treatment. Many people say the warmth is comforting and relaxing. Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) is offered if there is any discomfort.

Safe for the Surrounding Tissue

The PinPointe™ FootLaser™ does not damage the surrounding nails or tissue. Patients do not have to worry about killing healthy tissue with this innovative treatment.

No Recovery Time

Patients are free to resume normal activities immediately after the procedure. There is no recovery or downtime with the PinPointe™ FootLaser™. Many patients come in for a lunch procedure and go back to work right after without any of their colleagues knowing.

Toe Fungus Treatment Risks

Persistence

There is a small risk that the toenail fungus will not respond to laser treatment. Oral antifungals for 9-12 months would be the next option (why laser toenail fungus treatment is so popular).

Thermal injury

Very rarely, the laser can cause a very minor burn of the nail plate, which heals over time.

Why Choose SpaMedica for a Toe Fungus Treatment?

Dr. Mulholland is a leader in the use of non-invasive lasers and has developed numerous techniques to make laser treatments more effective, achieving optimal results overall. Dr. Mulholland’s gentle approach and overall success rate treating toenail fungus is the reason why he and his skillfully trained staff at SpaMedica remain the experts in the industry and have offered laser toenail treatments longer than any other Toronto Centre.

Nonsurgical Toe Fungus Treatment Alternatives

Nail plate ablation (removal) and prolonged oral and topical antifungals are the only alternatives when the PinPointe™ laser toe treatment fails.

How Is a Toe Fungus Treatment Performed by SpaMedica?

Dr. Mulholland personably performs or supervises toe fungus treatments at SpaMedica. This treatment is painless, therefore anaesthesia is not required. The SpaMedica laser technician uses the PinPointe™ FootLaser™ to kill the fungus. The laser is trained on the toenail and emits a gentle laser beam of energy to the treatment area. The laser fires and then takes a break, so the nail matrix can cool down. Then, it fires again. The laser’s heat is attracted to the fungi and heats it to 79 degrees. This results in nonspecific thermal death.

How to Prepare for a Toe Fungus Treatment

To prepare for toe fungus treatment at SpaMedica patients must:

  • Remove nail polish
  • Clip the nails

Patients may also be asked to thin the nail beds, which can also be done at SpaMedica.

What to Expect After a Toe Fungus Treatment

There is no recovery period following a toe fungus treatment. Patients can put their shoes on and leave SpaMedica immediately following the procedure. The procedure kills the fungus, but patients won’t notice the results until the new nail grows. The healthy new nail should be visible in approximately three months, although it takes 6 to 9 months for the toenail to replace itself.

Toe Fungus Treatment Recovery and Timeline

While there is no recovery period following this procedure, patients must take proper care of their toenails to prevent a recurrence. This includes lifestyle changes, such as no longer getting pedicures in unsanitary nail salons and only wearing dry shoes.

Patients will also be instructed to use a topical fungal treatment for three weeks. This treatment is put directly on the nail plate. Patients are also encouraged to throw out their old footwear. As an additional precaution, patients can purchase ultraviolet light inserts to place in their shoes. These inserts are available at SpaMedica and reduce the risk of getting another nail fungus from contaminated footwear.

Best Procedures Paired With Toe Fungus Treatment

Laser Hair removal, cellulite and fat reduction work well with laser foot fungus treatment.

Toe Fungus Treatment FAQ

How Painful Is It to Get a Toe Fungus Treatment?

Toe fungus treatment is not painful. Patients typically feel a warming sensation during the procedure, but it is not painful or even uncomfortable.

Will the Treatment Permanently Cure the Fungus?

Yes, the results of the toe fungus treatment are typically permanent. However, patients must take proper care to avoid getting another toe fungus. Fungi live in the environment, and if people do not take precautions, their toes could get infected once again. Dr. Mulholland provides home care tips to reduce this risk.
