Lip injections, like any medical procedure, carry certain risks. However, at SpaMedica, our experienced non-surgical team—comprising of dermatologists, and registered nurses, all led by Dr. Amber Chen—has been expertly administering lip filler injections for over two decades, ensuring that the likelihood of any serious complications is minimal. Typically, any side effects should subside within 48 hours. If they persist, it’s important to inform your specialist promptly. Most complications can be effectively addressed with an enzyme antidote that dissolves the lip filler, reversing the effects safely.
Side effects for non-surgical lip augmentation are similar to those associated with dermal fillers, including:
Refrain from utilizing blood thinners such as fish oils, Aspirin, Aleve, ibuprofen, and Advil for at least seven days before your appointment – this also pertains to alcohol. Drink plenty of water before your procedure, as it will improve your body’s ability to heal itself. If you have a history of cold sores, please notify your doctor, as injections may trigger a flare-up. Keeping the treatment area clean and well moisturized will significantly minimize your risk of infection and pain.
While swelling and redness may be present for the first 24- 72 hours after your injection, the swelling is normal and will subside entirely after one week. Do not massage your lips, as it risks moving the filler around. Refrain from exercise for at least 24 hours post-procedure to not increase blood flow to your face.
1 hour: Ice your lips to decrease inflammation.
24 hours: Refrain from exercising or strenuous activity.
6 days: Do not massage your lips.
1 Week: Your swelling will fully subside, and results will appear.
After 1 Week: You can begin applying makeup and regular skin care routine again.
Botox, soft tissue dermal fillers for the cheeks, chin, and facial areas, and fractional lasers are often paired with lip injections.
The use of injectables or fillers while pregnant has not been FDA-approved.
You must wait until your lip filler’s numbing agent (lidocaine) has worn off before you can comfortably eat and drink following your procedure. This generally takes a few hours. In addition, avoid eating or drinking any foods or drinks that are difficult to chew in the first 24 hours following your procedure, as this may compromise your procedure’s results.
As most fillers are blended with lidocaine, you barely feel a thing. There is a tiny initial prick, and the lidocaine kicks in virtually instantly. At SpaMedica, we deploy laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, to ensure that all injection and laser patients are comfortable.
There may be some swelling and redness associated with dermal fillers, and it’s recommended to ice the treatment area for at least an hour following the procedure.
Since the results of lip injections are never permanent, many choose to return for supplemental lip filler injections a year after treatment.
Most patients opt for 1-2 syringes of filler. One syringe has 1.0 cc of dermal filler, lasting anywhere between 10 to 18 months.
