How Long Does a Leg Vein Treatment Take?

A Leg Vein procedure takes about 15-30 minutes per leg. Most candidates require a minimum of 3 to 6 treatments every 3 to 4 weeks to see the best results.

What is a Leg Vein Treatment

Whether it be purple or red spider veins or bulging varicose veins, the legs are a body area that can amass many unsightly veins. Not only are these veins a cosmetic issue, they can also cause pain, itchiness and swelling.

Thankfully, there are a variety of leg vein treatments available to diminish unsightly veins.

If you are seeking a leg vein reduction specialist in Toronto, Dr. Stephen Mulholland and the cosmetic dermatologists at SpaMedica offer the best, most advanced and effective leg vein reduction treatments available.

Who is a Leg Vein Treatment Candidate?

Leg vein reduction candidates include women and men over 18 years old who have a cosmetic concern with unwanted leg veins. Candidates should be in good physical and mental health, not suffer from reflux (leakiness) of the deeper venous system, and have realistic expectations of the treatment results.

How is a Leg Vein Treatment Performed by SpaMedica?

During your initial consultation your leg will be scanned with venous ultrasound to allow the SpaMedica specialists to determine what kind of customized leg vein therapy is required.

If you have leakiness at the high groin point (sapheno-femoral junction), a procedure called Endoluminal Leg Vein Closure will be performed. Once the local anesthetic is instilled, the procedure involves inserting a small laser into the hand or leg. Under ultrasound guidance, the laser is threaded up through the saphenous vein; emitting laser energy which closes off the large saphenous vein.

Once the larger leaky veins in your leg are controlled, the cosmetically displeasing large varicose veins and spider veins can be targeted. A small procedure (phlebectomy) using an instrument removes the larger veins. This procedure is done quickly and often can be performed at the same time as the endoluminal venous closure.

Smaller spider veins or spider varicosities are treated with traditional injection sclerotherapy using chemical scleroscents. At SpaMedica we perform the “double injury” technique where laser leg vein removal is combined with chemical sclerotherapy for the highest possible success in removing spider veins.

How to Prepare for a Leg Vein Treatment

To aid the healing process, it is advised that patients avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements, stop smoking at least 2 weeks prior, and maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle.

What to Expect After a Leg Vein Treatment

Immediately after treatment, patients can expect some redness and puffiness in the treatment area. It is possible to return to work or normal activities immediately after treatment.

It is recommended that patients wear our medical grade Home Skin Care and Leg Vein Support Garments for 1-2 weeks after the treatment to help support recovery and maximize the outcome.

95% of patients achieve improvement of the saphenous and femoral reflux, and, after 4 to 6 sessions of spider vein therapy, patients enjoy over 75% improvement in visible varicose and spider veins.

Leg Vein Treatment Recovery & Timeline

Day 2: Initial redness and puffiness will have subsided.

Week 1: Most bruising and ‘cat scratch’ marks will have now healed.

Week 2: Compression support garments can be removed.

Leg Vein Treatment FAQ

How Painful is it to Get a Leg Vein Treatment?

Although the treatment might sound painful, today’s minimally invasive treatment requires  little downtime and is virtually pain free. The use of Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) helps make leg vein reduction comfortable.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins are caused by increased pressure in the veins that occur after the vein becomes damaged (pregnancy and inflammation). As the venous pressure increases, smaller valves in the surface systems also get backflow and you begin to develop visible spider veins. Veins can become defective for a variety of reasons, including pregnancy, weight gain/loss, hereditary factors, female hormonal influences.

What Causes Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, dilated veins that may be raised above the skin’s surface. This condition is caused by weak or damaged vein walls and valves that can be caused by any condition that puts pressure on the abdomen (pregnancy, constipation, obesity).
